Exhibition Proposal: Place
“A sense of place is to be sharply distinguished from a sense of space…. ‘Space’ means an arena of freedom without coercion or accountability, free of pressures and void of authority. …characterized by a kind of neutrality or emptiness waiting to be filled by our choosing. …But ‘place’ is a very different matter. Place is space that has historical meanings, where some things have happened that are now remembered and that provide continuity and identity across generations. …Place is indeed a protest against the unpromising pursuit of space. It is a declaration that our humanness cannot be found in escape, detachment, absence of commitment, and undefined freedom.” Walter Brueggemann
Over the past 9 years I have done several projects in which I have explored the nature of "place," looking for ways to better understand my relationship to both the environment and culture. Some of those projects relate to time I spent in Indonesia in 2008, others were exploring the place where I live, the western suburbs of Chicago. It is my belief that if we came to understand the places we live more fully, it would shape the way we thought about the land; the way we develop it, cultivate it, and build on it.
